There are many reasons people leave the government and join the private sector. It can be due to the money, working condition, colleagues or children's health. You cannot prevent people leaving, it is your destiny.

My teacher told me about his daughter who had just recently finished her study in Pharmacy from Indonesia. He had to spend about RM160k in school fees alone. This doesn't include other expenses such as rental, foods and traveling. Studying medicine in private is much more costly. Recently my uncle send his son to study Medicine in Eqypt at a cost of RM250k in school fees alone. I am sure he can afford that, since he is a financial consultant with PNB (Permodalan Nasional Berhad), who pays him a lot.

I have four daughters, in which the eldest is in Standard 4. That would give me 7 full years of time to find some amount of money to prepare myself to finance her tertiary education. What if she told me that she wanted to do medicine, but she doesn't get any place in any of the public university. That is what happened to my uncle. His son didn't perform very well in the matriculation, but at the end of the day, he told his father that he wanted to do medicine. You can never say no to your child. You can say no when she ask to buy expensive things. But you would have the guts to say no, when she wanted to study. If you say no, the guilty feeling will haunt you for the rest of your life.

The cost of doing Medicine at that point of time may reach RM500k. I can never afford that. Having said that, I can never afford the RM250k now, with the salary that I am currently obtaining. That would be the cost for one daughter. What if all four of them wanted to do medicine? For that, I may need about RM2 million.

Lets do some basic calculation. Since my youngest daughter is only 2, and by the time she reach 17, which is about 15 years from now, in which I will be 54, if god allows me to live until then. So, I only have 15 years of my life to get RM2 million. For this you need to save about RM130,000 per year, which is about RM10,000 per month. That is an awful lot of money!!!! If I save RM10,000 per month for the next 7 years, that would give me about RM840,000, which is enough for me to send both my eldest and second daughter to study medicine. I can still save some more money for the next two years, to supplement for the second daughter since she is younger by 2 years from her sister.

Studying medicine is the most expensive option. But studying dentistry, pharmacy, engineering or law are also expensive. What I am calculating might be the most expensive option. But the moral of the story is that, you need money for your children and you can't wait for the money to come to you.

So, the amount of money that you need will rise proportionately with the number of children that you have. If you have only one child, you only need about RM500,000 which you need to save about RM2500 per month for the next 15 years.

So, having more than 2 child, gives you a big reason to leave! Is this true? But can anyone tell me of any other way to get RM10,000 per month for the next 15 years, without leaving?

WINDOWS MOBILE 6.5: A NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR OLD WM SMARTPHONES.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/Sv-hfEMDwOI/AAAAAAAAAK0/pnWHlVapMYg/s320/screenshot1hnx.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404215632940220642" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 169px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/Sv-hevx7fqI/AAAAAAAAAKs/d83JmhncVhg/s320/dopod_d810_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404215627461918370" />
Dopod D810 was at its prime when it was launched about 3 years ago. If I can remember, the selling price is about RM2700 when it was launched. It was launched with WM5.0, with non functioning GPS. An official update for WM6.0 was launched about 1 year later, activating its GPS function.

However, due to the availability of new crops of WM smartphones, Dopod D810 was passed and not updated to WM 6.1 or WM6.5. This doesn’t prevent hackers especially from xdadevelopers forum to make their own updates, unofficially.

I bought this smartphone due to its GPS function, about 2 years after its launching, for about a half price of its official price. Quite a good price for a GPS unit, since the price of Garmin Nuvi at that time is around RM1k. You get a 3.5G phone besides the GPS, for another few hundred, quite a good bargain. I immediately updated the ROM to WM6.0 after buying it, since it came with WM5.0 ROM. It served perfectly as a GPS unit for my car. But it can never fight the newer A GPS units such as Nokia E71, in terms of GPS satellite locking time. WM6.0 is quite good and stable, better than WM5.0. However for WM devices, it is usually slow and lagging even though the processor is already 400MHz.

I did a search in the xdadevelopers forums and found a few stable WM6.5 ROMS for Dopod D810. Also did a search for WM 6.5 Treo 750v stable ROMS, but couldn’t find any. After downloading and reading the forums, I did a ROM upgrade for my Dopod D810. The procedure took less than 20 minutes.

First impression, WM6.5 seems to be much faster than WM6.0. The interface is also better than WM6.0. Most of the programmes seems to run faster on WM6.5 compared to WM6.0. Since using this new ROM for about 1 week, I haven’t got any autoreset or hanging on the smartphone.

SPB MobileShell was also updated to version 3.5 probably last year. The last version of SPB MobileShell, that I have used is version 2.0. Much has changed since then. The new version 3.5 has a much better interface as compared to the old version.

So, with the new WM6.5 ROM and SPB MobileShell 3.5, I have upgraded my old Dopod D810 as my secondary phone, replacing the old Treo 750v, which will kept lock in my drawer until the day the hackers from xdadeveloper can develop a stable WM6.5 ROM.

Can’t wait for WM7.0 to be launched early 2010, which for sure will be better than WM6.5..

UPGRADING YOUR DELL D420

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 303px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SqmdpsrIsGI/AAAAAAAAAKM/9jYfE29EOjw/s400/d420.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380004569563050082" />
I have given up on using my Dell D420, courtesy of the university. It is because of the slow hard disk, which is a 1.8 inch 4200rpm model. But I am sure, most of you are still using it as your primary computer. I have been opening up the compartments in the D420 since I found a SIM card slot under the battery. After reading and searching a few forums, I found out that the available WWAN slot in Dell D420 is actually active and you can just put a mini PCI WWAN card in it and then put a 3G SIM card in the SIM card slot under the battery to make it work. Dell has also provided two antennaes within it.

With this knowledge, I proceed to look for a cheap 3G WWAN card in ebay. You couldn't find any in lelong. The cheapest 3G WWAN card I could find is the Sierra MC8775 model. Most sellers are from Hong Kong, with a price of less than RM150. Much cheaper than a USB 3G modem sold by Celcom sellers, which are usually priced at RM199. A seller is selling at around RM130 in ebay malaysia.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 235px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/Sqmhtw2UfmI/AAAAAAAAAKk/H_ng0mpmapo/s400/MC8775.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380009037449690722" />
I bought from another seller. The card is just another mini PCI type card. To install, you can read or follow the manual from Dell.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 277px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SqmePVdL1rI/AAAAAAAAAKU/gbnX6cJJIdY/s400/open.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380005216165549746" />
Just unscrew the three screws under the laptop. But before that, make sure you remove the battery first. Then plug in the antennae into the WWAN card. There are two antennae available. One is grey/white and the other is black/white. Plug in the grey/white antennae into the available port in the card marked as MAIN. Leave the black/white antennae alone. Then plug in the Sierra MC8775 card into the available WWAN PCI slot next to the PCI WLAN card. Then put in your unlimited package 3G SIM card in the slot under the battery. Put in the battery back in the slot.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 293px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SqmeuAsklaI/AAAAAAAAAKc/DBf6HdyBAXg/s400/WWAN.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5380005743168886178" />
Switch on the laptop. For sure, your laptop won't be recognising the WWAN card due to the nonavailabilty of drivers. Just download the driver and installer from sierrawireless. Install the software and wait for the laptop to recognise the WWAN card. Then start the Sierra Watcher program. I am getting a full bar Celcom 3G signal with HSDPA in my room at 3rd floor JHC. The software supports SMS. I also found a dialer, which supposed to enable voice call from your laptop. But I have yet to try it now. This blog is typed from the Dell D420 running Windows 7 Ultimate RC, with an internal Sierra MC8785 3G WWAN on Celcom HSDPA.

Even though I am doing this on a Dell D420, I am sure it will also work perfectly with a Dell D430, which most of you are using too. This is because of a similar internal architecture and motherboard of these two Latitude laptops. There is another newer Sierra card available which is the MC8781 model. This model do support GPS, in which it support 3G and GPS in one PCI card. The added advantage of using this card, is that you can use your laptop as a GPS machine with without having to have another bluetooth or USB GPS unit. However you still need to have a GPS software installed, which I would recommend Garmin Mobile PC. This card is slightly more expensive, and since I already have a bluetooth GPS available, I don't find the need to buy a more expensive card.

This modification is so easy since you don't have to do any soldering to the motherboard. But since my primary laptop is a nearly perfect MSI McWindtosh running Leopard OSX 10.5.8, I need to find a way to have an internal 3G in it, which for sure will need a soldering of SIM slot into the motherboard.

Enjoy...

GETTING PROMOTION: THE FAST TRACK

Being in the eduction line, has its own advantages and disadvantages. Let's not talk or discuss on that, it would be too boring. Getting a promotion in any job or service is a dream of everyone. Being in the education line, your promotion heavily depends on your research and publications. The teaching part comes along with it, since you must teach to get paid. So, how do you get a fast track on your promotion? The key is to get along the correct colleague or people. Teamwork is the key to success.

Is it quite easy. You only need to have another two colleague in the same profession, be it in a different specialty or a different institution. However all three of you must work hard, or extra hard to do research and publish. If all three work very hard, it would be very simple. You only need to do two research per year and publish three papers per year. In all the research and publications, all three of the members of the team will contribute in ideas and have their names in all the research and publications. The key person will always be the principal researcher or authors. Within a year, each of the members will have 6 researches completed and 9 papers published. In 3 years time, each of the members will have 18 researches completed and 27 papers published either locally or internationally. With all these in your resume, you can get promoted anytime and anywhere...

Now, where can I get that two person..........

WHY YOU NEED TO DO LOCUM (PART 3).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 176px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SiYzSXMUMuI/AAAAAAAAAKE/UClTja3LrTg/s400/locum2.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343014398478004962" />
As you know doing locum forced you to work fast and finishes all the reporting urgently, or at the latest 1 hour after the examination is completed. This is a very good practise to your alertness and diagnostic sharpness. You must or forced to make a diagnosis within minutes. If you don't know, you have to find the answer in a very short period either via the internet or books. By doing frequent locums, your sharpness in making a diagnosis and rapidity in producing report increases. Getting back your current practise in government hospital, with this behavioural change, you tend to finish your report as urgently as possible. This would be good for the patients in your current hospital.

So by doing frequent locums, you don't only get more money, you will have behavioural change, control your anger, talk more courteously to patients and other doctors and also increase the productivity of your current hospital. Go ahead, do more locums..... Hehe!!

WHY YOU NEED TO DO LOCUM (PART 2)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 175px; height: 175px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SiYyJARNtJI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/lxyxw8OPgGU/s400/Locum_Agency.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343013138194085010" />
Patient population in both private and government hospitals are slightly different. In private hospitals, they are more demanding and sometimes complaint a lot. Most of the private physicians tends to be more accepting to the behaviour of their patients. By doing locums, you will learn to change your approach to these patients. You also tend to control your anger even when your are in a tense position. You also tend to talk more or explain more to the patients about the procedures and findings of an examination. Even though, sometimes these behavioural changes may be a false change, it can be beneficial to you. By doing frequent locums, these behavioural changes can be a second nature to you. Going back to your service in the government hospital, these behavioural changes ie controlling your anger to patient's behaviour and explaining in detail about procedures and findings to patient, will be good to the patients in the hospital that you are currently practising.

Besides that, in receiving request for examinations in the department, in private hospital you tend to accept any request from the physician without any question. By doing frequent locums, the behaviour to reject a request for an examination can be diluted because of this. Going back to your service in the government hospital, the behavioural changes of not wanting to reject an examination would be good to the patients there. You will try not to reject requests for examination from housemans by using petty reasons.

So, doing frequent locums is actually good especially in changing your behaviour to patients and also housemans/physician. So, please do more locums. For those who have never done any locum, please do it. It is good for your health. Haha!!

WHY YOU NEED TO DO LOCUM?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 333px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SiSDaZbQTlI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/W_rCo94mevA/s400/locum.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342539547493289554" />
A simple answer is for the money of course. But apart from that, there is another reason. After all the hardwork to become a subspecialist, you tend to do or see more cases in your subspecialty field. You tend to neglect other work or modalities. As for me, I don't see any mammography images anymores, since I practically hate it. However, you need to keep abreast in all the advances in all the modalities. You also need to update and maintain your expertise in all the modalities. You can say that you will never resign from the government service, but time will tell. For this you have the need to maintain your knowledge and expertise in all modalities, besides improving your expertise in your subspecialty field.

To get all this, you need to do locum. During locum as you all know, you will see all types of cases in all modalities. To further maintain this, you need to do locum frequently, or at least once in two months. Would be better if you can get a daily part time locum after office hours or during weekends in your local private hospital...... This would be a better justification apart from the money..

PAPERS AND ENDNOTE X2

Writing and publishing is part and parcel of a life as an academician. Thinking and doing a research is already a major hurdle. However writing and publishing is a bigger hurdle to climb compared to doing a research. The most difficult part in writing is organizing your references and also citing your references in your paper or article. This is where this 2 programmes for Macintosh gives you a great help. Here I want to introduce Papers for Mac and Endnote X2 for Mac (Endnote is also available for Windows, Papers is not available for Windows, if you want to use it get a Mac).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 224px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/ShEh7ZZ5TTI/AAAAAAAAAJk/IgbXHgesetA/s400/papers.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337084337726246194" />
Papers function as a reference organizer for your references. You have thousands of PDF articles lying around in your computer cluttered and unorganized. It is very difficult to know what is in the files without opening it. If you are using a Mac, Quicklook will allow you to look into the PDF file. However using Papers, this will solve all your problems. Just import all your PDF files into Papers and it will do the rest. Papers can organize your PDF files according to authors, date, names and etc. You can quicklook into the PDF file, read it in full screen or just browse into it. Using the power of Safari tabbed browsing, it can have multiple tabs within Papers. If you have a PDF paper without any citated info within it, you can search the info from within Papers and match it into your article. The best thing is that, Papers is linked with most of the scholar search engine named Pubmed, Google Scholar and etc. The best thing about Papers, is that you can import or export the files that you have saved in Papers to EndNote.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 224px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/ShEiDN-HW9I/AAAAAAAAAJs/KPRXWIPQyrw/s400/endnote1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337084472095890386" />
Since papers only organize the PDF files, you need another software to help you to write. It is important that you can cite while you write. This is where EndNote comes in. EndNote is also a Reference Manager. Unlike Papers, it allows you to cite while you write. But why you need to use Papers since EndNote is also a Reference Manager? Papers has a function where you can open the PDF file within the programme, unlike EndNote. For EndNote, to view the PDF file, you still need to open the file using either Adobe Reader or Preview. However the new EndNote version X1 and X2 allows you to search while in the EndNote itself. Pubmed is usually the default search engine. It also allows you to search full text article if it is available free to you. However for subscribed journals, it also allows you to key in your username and password. Most of the common libraries are listed in the EndNote. EndNote also has EndNote Web which allows you to have your reference to be online in the EndNote server. For those who have never heard about EndNote, this is what EndNote do. It helps you to organize your references while you write. Different journals have different styles especially when you want to cite an article. Some journals want it to be superscript, some want it next to the reference. For references, some journals want the whole list of authors listed while some only want the first three, with the rest et al. This is where EndNote help you in doing all these. You can choose which journal you want to send the article to, and EndNote will do the rest. Lets say, 6 months on the road, your paper is rejected by the first journal. You just open EndNote and change the name of the journal and EndNote will change the paper style exactly according to the second journal requirements. Easy......

Now, there is no reason for you not to write........

THE FINAL JIGSAW IN THE MSI MCWINDTOSH

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 234px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SfKpG9JZTUI/AAAAAAAAAJM/HSA8n1R79wY/s400/10506.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5328507246090997058" />
Finally had the guts to install all the kext and upgrade my MSI McWindTosh from 10.5.4 to 10.5.6. Actually, the process is not that difficult. The complete tutorial can be read and followed here. To make it simple, first you must have a USB mouse and keyboard available. Connect both the USB mouse and keyboard and make sure it will work with your MSI. Then download the needed files such as OSX86 Tools, Vivarey's 10.5.6 upgrade pack and also the Mac OSX 10.5.6 Combo update pack. After ensuring both the USB mouse and keyboard are working, install the Mac OSX 10.5.6 Combo update pack. After the complete installation, your display will go back to 800 x 600 and both the keyboard and trakcpad will stop functioning. Within the Vivarey's 10.5.6 upgrade pack, there are three folders named Display, Keyboard and Trackpad. Within the Display folder, there are First and Second folder. Install all the 3 kext within the First folder, using OSX86 Tool (the install kexts button). Make sure you reboot the netbook after each kext installation. After finishing installing all 3 kexts, then install the GMA file in the second folder (don't need the OSX86 Tool, just double click). At the end of this, you will get back the 1024 x 600 screen resolution. Then install the kext in the keyboard folder and trackpad folder one by one, with restarting the netbook after each installation. With all these 3 installation, you will get back both the keyboard and mouse again.

Finally, do a software update again, to look for any new updates from Apple. Then with the 10.5.6 already installed in my netbook, I proceed to install ILIFE 09.

However I noted that the headphone jack is not working well, in which the netbook sound is not diverted into the headphone when it was plugged in. Found the driver for this, which is VoodooHA. Please feel free to download it and find the instruction on how to do the installation from here. For a short method, please open the/System/Library/Extensions folder in your OSX. Then find the AppleHDA.kext and remove it (or delete it). Please make a backup before deleting. Then install the new kext, ie Voodoopower.kext in the same folder and do a restart of the netbook. With this new kext, the headphone will work if any headphone plugged into it. However the internal microphone including the external output for the microphone will not work still. The only solution for this, is to buy a USB microphone and do the VOIP calls using this USB phone.

So, that is the final jigsaw for my MSI McWindTosh until someone find a driver for the internal microphone.

MACBOOK AIR VS MSI MCWINDTOSH

Just a chart comparing my MSI McWindtosh and Macbook Air.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 293px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/Sdys3RKCaII/AAAAAAAAAI8/I9zvGHr8MFA/s400/MSI2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322318925143369858" />
So, the clear winner is MSI McWindtosh.

A COMPLETE TRANSFORMATION

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SdFtWJgHkeI/AAAAAAAAAIs/64baddl_aIc/s320/img029.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319152862176448994" />
Did a complete transformation of my MSI McWindtosh to a Macbook Nano. Had been searching high and low for a laptop sticker cover with an Apple logo. Yesterday, went to the supposedly IT Centre at level 3, East Coast Mall, Kuantan, Pahang. The supposedly called IT Centre is just two or three shops selling mainly PC accessories. Other things are just boring. Just browsing the accessories and stumbled a good looking Apple laptop sticker. Bought is for RM15 and did the complete transformation that night.

PLAYING MOVIES IN MAC

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 266px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/Sb-KIAN2MYI/AAAAAAAAAIc/TIDAw8SFNBs/s320/perianshot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314117955422138754" />
My McWindTosh is so small and portable. With 500GB hard disk around, it would make a great DVD player. Playing DVD movies, need you to have an external DVD drive. However you can also use Handbrake to convert your DVD movies to either MP4 or AVI. To play the movies, you can either use VLC media player for Mac OSX or Quicktime. However, quicktime has a limitation on playing MOV format only. Installing Perian, called the swiss army knife for quicktime solved all these. With perian installed, quicktime can play AVI, MP4, FLV and etc. Now, where did I put all my DVD collection. Need to convert them all to fill up my hard disk. IS IT WORTH ALL THE TROUBLE (OR TROUBLES)?

Continuing education never ends in Medicine. Learning is a life long process. The day you finish your first degree be it MD or MBBS, you have to think about postgraduate education. The day you finish your second degree or masters, you have to think about subspecialty or fellowship training.

Subspecialty training or fellowship training is a different ballgame if you want to compare to masters programme. At this point of time, most of us is settling down with many commitments either personal or family.

To even start thinking of a subspecialty training is already a major decision. You have to start looking for training centres either locally or in other foreign countries. Usually in many centres, there will be at least 2 or 3 years of waiting list, unless you have close contact to the training consultant. Even after you have secured the place, it might be difficult to secure a working visa for you in the particular country for you to work. Even after you have secured both the training centre and working visa, some of you may not be able to secure any scholarship for the fellowship training. I have a colleague who took a MARA loan to do her fellowship. She is still paying the loan now.

After all these troubles, then it came to the time for you to go for your fellowship. The scholarship is usually not enough to cover your living expenses for the whole duration of the studies. You need to fork out your live savings for the studies. Sometimes you have to spend your credit card up to the limit and do the payment later. One of my colleague spend to the limit, two of his credit cards while doing his fellowship. The credit card payments were only settled after 2 years later on. Comparing to a non medical personnel who did masters or PhD overseas, we don't have the luxury to do odd jobs to cover for our living expenses overseas. This is because you usually work the whole day and sometimes doing on calls, without pay. If you compared to your colleague in Singapore, they were usually given a bigger scholarship. Their scholarship were given by the Ministry of Human Resources. As a comparison, 5 years ago, our scholarship to France is Euro500, whereas their scholarship is Euro1500, a Euro1000 difference. Now, if you go to Europe, you will get around Euro1500 per month if your bring your whole family together (maximum 4 children will be paid allowances).

Then, your wife or husband may have to take unpaid leave or resign from his or her job. This is another loss of income, which will deprive you of your spending power while you study. Then, your children, who need to go to school in a foreign country. It is fortunate for them, if you are doing your fellowship in an English speaking country such and UK or Australia. They can go to the country's public school. The fees are usually cheaper or free. If you are doing your fellowship in a non English speaking country, you may have to opt for International School. With the current scholarships that were given to us, we can never afford International School. Only if you work with Malaysian Embassy, you can afford International School. If you can't afford it, would your children miss school for a year?? That is for you to decide.

After the long one year of fellowship, you came back to your current employer or university. With it, you were confered a Fellowship or etc, etc. But with it, you also carry unpaid credit card bills, bank loans, your children missing school in Malaysia and your wife not working for a year. Your house would surely be in a mess, after leaving it for a year.

One year gone, you missed the CLA5 (Penilaian Tahap Kecekapan 5) and you miss the boat for your promotion. Your colleagues who graduated the same year with you got the promotion earlier since he didn't missed the CLA5. Will you get any extra increament?? NO. Will you get recognition for the work you have done?? NO.

So, the question is, is it worth all the troubles???? This is a difficult question to answer. For me, a big YES. However since I dare not sacrifice my children's education and I can't afford to spend a lot of money for overseas fellowship, I have done my fellowship locally. I still need to spend a lot of money for weekly traveling from Kuantan to KL and also spending for the house rental. The scholarship of RM1000 (RM900 + RM100 extra COLA) is not enough to cover it all. You have to sacrifice something to get something else. The extra amount of money I spent is peanuts if compared to others who had spent doing fellowship in France, Turkey, UK or Australia.

Why do doctors still go for their fellowship, with all the troubles and suffering for them and their families?? I can list some and others can add more.

a. Personal satisfaction: If you like to do something, you will go for it, no matter how big the obstacle is.

b. To be better: In a more challenging world now, being a generalist is not an option. In the past, when you passed as a doctor, you resign and opened your GP clinic after 3 years. Your clinic will be prosperous. However now, you may not survive 2 years if your open a clinic.

c. For promotion purposes: As I mentioned above, you won't get your immediate increament or extra allowances after you finish your fellowship. However, it could become a platform for your promotion. In a university setting, if you planned or decided to apply for a Professorship (VK7) in 5 years time, it would be easier for a subspecialist. You will receive specific cases for your subspecialty. From there, you can collect and have a database of your specific patients and cases. With the databases, you can conduct trials, studies, publish papers, give talks, conduct conferences, conduct courses, becoming consultants to other centres and etc. All of these will give you extra points for your promotion.

d. To start a new service in your current centre: No subspecialists in your current area of expertise is available in your current centre and you want to give something to the public. It is quite noble I think.

d. Greener pasteure (not sure if it is a correct spelling): Some people use this as a platform to go to private. In a competitive world now, being a subspecialist increase your value in private hospitals. You can command more salary and cover more hospitals and doing specific cases if you are a subspecialists. However after saying all these, please remember that the public is paying for you subspecialty training. Please give them at least 5 years of wonderful service and then resign. The 5 years will increase your skills, add value to your work ethics, satisfy the public service. Lastly, please still do come and give 'amal jariah' to the public hospitals after leaving.

Lastly, please make sure you pay your WIFE and CHILDREN handsomely after all these troubles. They are the ones who suffered a lot when you did your training, doesn't matter whether it is locally or in another country.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://drzalie.blogspot.com/2009/03/subspecialty-in-medicine-is-it-worth.html' title='SUBSPECIALTY IN MEDICINE. First is as a complete backup of your hard disk. The second reason is to migrate to a bigger hard disk. For windows, there are a few softwares available such as Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost. I used Norton Ghost 14 to clone my Windows XP partition and both my data and backup partition to my new 500GB hard disk. For OSX, Norton Ghost won't work since it is a HFS partition. For Mac you can use either SuperDuper (Shareware) or Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware). I used Carbon Copy Cleaner to clone my OSX partition, since I felt very lazy to do a complete reinstallation of the OSX to my new hard disk.

Since I have already put in the 500GB hard disk in the MSI Wind, I booted my OSX partition on my old 160GB hard disk via USB. It booted well and my new Dell 1390 miniPCI wifi card was immediately detected. Opened the network configuration. Added a new network configuration with Airport and the icon came out and it began to search for any wifi network. My home wifi network was detected immediately. Punch in the WEP key and I began surfing wirelessly. I open the Mac OS Device info, the card was detected as a third party wireless card. No other information available.

Then started the cloning process using Carbon Copy Cloner to my new 500GB hard disk which was already installed in the McWindTosh. It took about one hour for it to complete. After completion, I restart the computer again. It failed to boot!!!! No problem. Ubuntu Live 8.04 USB stick is available with me. I used it to boot the notebook and put the Win XP partition to boot instead of the OSX partition. With the Darwin bootloader I managed to run both Win XP partition and OSX partition.

However I noticed that there is a slight slownees in the booting of both Win XP and OSX partition in the new 500GB hard disk as compared to the old 160GB hard disk. Maybe it is due to the bigger size of the new hard disk. *** EDITED: I also noticed that the clock in the McWindTosh becomes very slow. Playing movies in Quicktime is also slow. Searched the forums for solution. Found it. I installed the old Chameleon EFI. I am supposed to install the new Chameleon DFE for hard disk. I downloaded it, which is about 10MB and reinstall the DMG file. After that, there is a slight change in the Darwin bootloader. However everything goes back to normal. No more lagging clock. Movies in quicktime is also much faster.

Now I have a MSI McWindTosh with a megasize hard disk with working wifi, bluetooth, vga out, ethernet, sound, webcam and 3G (with Huawei USB modem). The VGA out to external monitor or LCD projector works only with extended desktop mode. The mirror display doesn't work unless you install the new GMA950 video driver. However with the new GMA950 driver, there will be a severe lagging and mouse trailing seen when you use any Microsoft Office products. So I decided to only use the extended desktop mode for the VGA out and not to install the new GMA950 driver.

Next project is to do an upgrade to Leopard 10.5.6, for me to use ILife 09. This is slightly more difficult since you have to use many Kernels and drivers. But for now Leopard 10.5.4 is good enough.

UPGRADING THE MSI MCWINDTOSH

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 192px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/Sb-K5c7htdI/AAAAAAAAAIk/TNXvANA_Pog/s200/Dell1390.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314118804943517138" />
My hands are getting itchy for the last few weeks. Really satisified with the Leopard installation in my MSI Wind, even though it is only version 10.5.4. Browsing ebay Malaysia to look for a mini PCI Dell 1390 which should work for both Windows and Mac OSX. I am not very keen on using the Realtek driver for the stock mini PCI card in MSI Wind, since you don't get the wifi icon when you are using Leopard. Found from a few sellers from Hong Kong which gives free shipping to Malaysia. One of the seller is selling here. I got it at around RM65 from a different seller. The package arrived within less than 2 weeks. Since I will be opening the MSI Wind to change the mini PCI card, why not upgrade the Hard Disk too. So, for this upgrading, I bought myself a 500GB Western Digital Scorpio SATA hard disk at Digital Mall PJ. The price is the same with my current portable Western Digital Passport 320GB Hard Disk which I bought 6 months ago.

The surgery is quite simple. I just need to remove 9 screws from the bottom of the MSI Wind. Then remove the screw from the mini PCI wireless card. Then remove the Wifi miniPCI card first. Then remove the screw under the Wifi miniPCI card. Then lift up the hard disk and pull it out of the socket. Turn the Hard Disk over, and remove the bracket which is attached by 2 screws. Put the bracket back onto the new hard disk. Put it back into the socket. To insert the new Dell 1390 miniPCI wifi card, i had to remove the extra bracket from the motherboard. This is because the Realtek Wifi miniPCI card has a flat back, whereas the Dell 1390 miniPCI card has a slightly elevated back. The extra bracket can be removed using a plier easily. Then put the new Dell 1390 miniPCI card into the wifi slot and screw it. Make sure you put back the 2 wires for the antennae, which are grey and black in colour. After finishing all these, you can put back the back cover and put in all the 9 screws back in.

Restart your computer and pres DEL a few times to go to the setup menu. Check the IDE part to confirm that your new Hard Disk is detected. Mine was detected immediately, as a 500GB hard disk.

Before installing the hard disk, i managed to copy the Windows XP partition and both my Data and Backup partition into the new hard disk using Norton Ghost 14. It was so easy, much easier than using Acronis software. I didn't copy the OSX partition since I don't think Norton Ghost can do it well. With a 500GB Hard Disk, I have a lot of space. I gave OSX a 265GB partition, since I want to keep all my patient datas for Osirix in the hard disk. Windows gets 50GB, Data gets 60GB, Backup gets 60GB. I also reserved a 40GB partition for movies, music and etc.

Upon installation of the hard disk, I immediately start using Windows XP. Norton Ghost 14 did a good job of completely copying all the Win XP partition into the new hard disk. The new Dell 1390 miniPCI wifi card was detected immediately. However it cannot find the driver. So I downloaded the driver using my 3G line. It took around 15 minutes to finish downloading the driver since it is a 52MB file. After unzipping the file, using device manager, I reinstalled the driver from the folder and the card was detected as a Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini Card. However the only disadvantage of this Dell 1390 as compared to the stock Realtek mini card is the absence of 802.11n. Dell 1390 card only support B and G only. This is not a major problem for me now.

Next step is to do a new installation of Leopard using the MSIWindOSX86.iso using the Leopard HD install method. Since I have already done a last backup using Time Machine, I hope I can do a fast restoration after the installation. This is for the next writeup.

AZTECH 3G ROUTER

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SZ4I8dd9H5I/AAAAAAAAAH8/B1oEDLX-6J0/s320/aztech+3g.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304687245884465042" />
I am using an unlimited Celcom D50 3G package as my primary internet connection at home. This is shared with my wife and kids. It is used with a Sierra 875U USB modem. Since there are 4 notebooks at home, I need to plug and unplug the Sierra modem to whatever notebook I want to access internet with, which is quite troublesome. Due to this, the search for a cheap 3G router starts. There are a few models such as DLink, Huawei and Vodafone Zuhause. Most are priced around RM500 to RM800.

At last I found the Aztech 3G Router, which cost me only RM320, at Digital Mall, PJ. It accepts most of the USB 3G modem available. In the box, it mentioned that Huawei E220 works well. However I tried it with my Sierra 875U USB modem with the enclosed adapter. It works without a flaw. The only problem is that it only have one RJ45 output, so it means that all of your notebook or PCs have to be connected via wifi. So I set up the WEP key and got all of my notebooks connected via the router.

Since Celcom had recently upgraded their 3G and HSDPA coverage in Kuantan, my house was covered with HSDPA since last year. I don't think there will be a slow down in the internet speed with all the 4 notebooks online.

Now to setup my wife's Nokia N85 for wifi and teach her how to do it. She might get the hang of chatting or blogging with it later.

Next step is to hang the router high up on the wall, probably in my store room to ensure a very good strength of the wifi signal around my house and the balcony.

TURN YOUR DUMBPHONE TO A SMARTPHONE

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 258px; height: 319px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SY7BCsP9IdI/AAAAAAAAAH0/ygfA2c0Xow0/s320/6151.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300386063443632594" />
After taking over the S40 Nokia 6151 from my wife, I have fallen in love with the phone due to its simplicity and size. However to fully utilize the phone, i need to install softwares which will help me to do my daily work. In my Treo 750v, the common applications which i used are emails, web browser, calendar, SPB finance, Vehicle manager, quran, prayer times and IM. Due to this I have searched the suitable replacements for these applications.

a. Emails: Since all my emails are using Gmail, installing the GMAIL java app (m.google.com) is the solution of my email woes for Nokia S40 device. The Gmail 2.0 allows multiple emails account via the same application. It is very fast and allows you to type email even when there is no phone signal around.

b. Web Browser: Opera Mini (mini.opera.com)is well known to be a great web browser for any smartphones. It works very fast on the Nokia S40 device. The good thing is that it allows you to sync your bookmarks with your online account.

c. Calendar and contacts: For calendar and contacts, i sync the Nokia S40 phone with my Macbook using Isync. However to sync with Microsoft Outlook, you can also use the latest Nokia PC Suite.

d. IM: Fring is the best application for a unified IM for a S40 device. Just download the application from m.fring.com. You can have all your IMs such as MSN Messenger, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ and Google talk within the same account.

e. Prayerminder: For prayertimes, Azan 2.6 from SearchTruth.com gives you qiblah and prayertimes of all the cities in the world. It is free too.

f. Quran: For a complete quran, Quran 1.0 or Pocket Quran gives you a mobile quran. However it still cannot replace Pocket Islam.

g. Encrypted Notes or Password manager: Enigma is quite good for you to keep your bank account numbers and etc. However i am not sure about the level of encryption of this software.

The two application in which i could find (a good one) is the replacement for SPB finance and Vehicle Manager.

But as for now, these application had make my Nokia 6151, a S40 phone a smartphone minus the size. The advantage of Nokia 6151 over Treo 750v is the small size and the battery which lasted for at least 2 days. It also has a FM radio, which my Treo 750v hasn't. However to type long emails using the Nokia 6151 is a no no, very very slow.

NOKIA 6151 SOFTWARE UPDATES

I have been using a Nokia S40 phone now as my primary phone with my Digi line. I took it from my wife who has upgraded to a Symbian Nokia N85. Since I took over the phone, I noted that it has been buggy with the SMS centre always missing. So I decided to upgrade the phone software using the Nokia Software updater. However I need to buy the cable which is the CA-53 model, since bluetooth cannot be used for the updating process. The updating process only took less than 15 minutes.

The updated software repaired the missing SMS centre and the MMS. However i noted that i cannot install the GMAIL java application which resulted in 'invalid application' post installation. Googled a few websites and found the solution here. I need to download directly the GMAIL java app using the Nokia Web browser using this URL : (http://m.google.com/app/gmail.jad?dc=gorganic&ver=v2.0.6). Post installation it works as before. This is maybe due to a buggy jar app downloaded directly from m.google.com.

HOW TO SYNC MICROSOFT OUTLOOK WITH ICAL USING GOOGLE CALENDAR

Since I am currently using both Windows XP and Mac, I need to have my calendars seen in Microsoft Outlook in Windows and Ical in Mac. How do I do it? It was a headache previously. However recently Google adds CalDAV support to Google Calendar. What is CalDAV support? This is taken exactly from Google blog. "CalDAV is an open protocol that allows calendar access via WebDAV. CalDAV models calendar events as HTTP resources in iCalendar format, and models calendars containing events as WebDAV collections. This allows you to publish and subscribe to calendars, share them collaboratively, sync between multiple users and sync between multiple devices." To see the google calendar in your Ical in Mac, just download the setup tool here and follow all the instructions.

So, in simple term, you can have an online google calendar in your ical and all your calendar editing in ical is synced with google calendar. To sync Microsoft Outlook with google calendar, you need to install Google Calendar Sync in your Windows XP PC. Make sure the setup in the Google Calendar Sync is two way instead of one way.

So, guys, your Microsoft Outlook, Ical and Google Calender events will be synced all the time. But all these have to be done manually.

With this, it doesn't matter if your smartphone or dumbphone is synced with Outlook or Ical, all your events in all your calendars will look the same. Even if you left your notebook, macbook, smartphone or dumbphone at home, you can still edit your calendar in a cybercafe at Google Calendar and all the changes can be synced in all the calendars.

END OF THE QUEST

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 202px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SWmWUJeOZyI/AAAAAAAAAHs/8qHSfrk2mXk/s320/msi_wind_mac_os_x.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289924510207600418" />
The quest has ended. I have managed to install a dual boot Win XP Pro and Mac OSX on the MSI Wind. Using this tutorial from MSI Wind forums. It was just a breeze, finished the installation within half an hour. But i did a mistake of not removing the recovery partition, making the MSI Wind unbootable. It is supposed to be rectified easily by using Ubuntu 8.04 Live USB stick, to make the windows partition bootable. However since i don't have a good internet connection at that point of time, i made a mess of the installation. So, i have to remove or reformat the whole HD and do a complete installation of both OS.

To install Win XP for the MSI Wind, i need to use a USB method using USB multiboot software and download the whole Win XP Pro CD into the 4GB USB Stick. It took about an hour for a complete installation. Then the HD is repartitioned using Partition Magic 8.0 into 4 partition. One for Win XP Pro, one for Mac OSX, one for data and one for the MSIWindOSX86.iso. Then i folllowed the tutorial again. However at this point of time, i already have a bootable Ubuntu 8.04 live with me. The Mac OSX installation was a breeze, completed within half an hour. After the complete installation, the MSI is unbootable. However managed to reboot using Ubuntu 8.04 live USB stick and i make the Win XP partition bootable. After that, using Darwin kernel, i managed to dual boot the Win XP and Mac OSX for the MSI Wind.

However the MSIWindOSX86.iso is using a 10.5.4 version of OSX. Haven't got time to upgrade to 10.5.6, since you need to use severel kernel or kext help methods. But i am happy with 10.5.4, which is good enough for me.

Next plan, is to upgrade the SATA HD to a 320GB SATA HD and do a complete installation of both Win XP Pro and Mac OSX again. That would be in a few months time. For the time being, the 160GB HD is good enough for me. Will be using an 80GB or 160GB USB portable HD for my OSIRIX datasets, since it will also be hooked into my Macbook too.

The Leopard HD Install Helper is a great help. It reduces the difficulty of using a USB stick or the need to buy a USB DVD drive. By using the Leopard HD Install Helper, a dual boot Laptop or PC, can be easily be done either using the Kalyway DVD or even IATKOS DVD.

With this Leopard HD Install Helper, I will try to do a dual boot on my Dell D420 and Lenovo G400 laptop at home. Need to find a time first to do that.

FAIR OR UNFAIR?

Life is full of choices. Its your own decision to make. As for me I have a choice to stay in government service or join a private institution. Both has the pros and cons. But what I want to discuss now is not the pros and cons of working in a government institution or working in a private institution. This is about the care of patients in a government or private hospitals. Let me start in my specialty first, ie Radiology Department before we discuss about other departments.
In most private hospitals, there are usually one radiologist as compared to a government hospital in which there are at least 4 radiologists. The number of radiologist and the efficiency of the radiologist will usually determine the patient care.
1. Reporting.
In PH (Private Hospitals), reports are done fast, usually within hours after the examination was performed. In Government Hospital (GH), reports are usually late, taking up to 3 days. But usually, urgent cases are also reported within hours too. I usually try to finish all my reports within the same day too. Most of the time in PH, you can report comfortably and decisively. However sometimes, probably less than 5% of cases, you are not sure or undecided. You are pressed to release the report since both the patient and attending doctor are waiting. You don't have the luxury to discuss with other colleagues or to refer to reference books in a very short time. So do you release a vague report or you delay the report? In a GH, you will have the luxury to discuss with other colleagues or to refer to specific reference books. If you release a vague report, will the patient care be compromised? So in this case, will a GH patient get a better care than a PH patient?
2. Image Quality
In most PH, machines are usually cheaper than in GH, since profits are more important. You tend to get less quality images. This could be attributed to less quality machine or less trained radiographer. So, when reporting on these images, do you think you will give a good report? In cases with less trained radiographer, usually PH radiographer do multitasking. So they tend not to be very expert in all modality. In a GH, usually there is a radiographer who is expert in certain modality. This specialized radiographer usually tend to give you high quality images. If you get low quality images in GH, you will usually ask them to repeat and repeat it until you get one. Or if you still can't get a good image, you may postponed the study t the next day with a better sedation. In PH, when you get a poor quality images, sometimes you don't have the time to call your radiographer to repeat the study due to the bulk of films in front of you waiting to be reported. Even when you ask your radiographer t repeat it, you might not get what you want due to the less experience in doing the imaging. It might not be his or her fault. It could be due to lack of experience in doing that type of case. So in this case, will a GH patient get a better care than a PH patient?
3. Physician's feedback
In a GH, we usually have weekly radiological conferences. In these conferences we will update ourselves on the findings of our reports in comparison to the operative findings. We also discuss on what the physicians or surgeons want in the report. With this, there will be learning in both ways. In a PH there is rarely a conference or any discussion with the physicians or surgeons, unless you make your own effort to ask. Sometimes you don't have the time to do it. With this, you will never know whether your report is correct or not? And also you might not learn new things from the physician or surgeon. So, in this case, will a GH patient get a better care than a PH patient?
I will add somemore when I can think of something else.
Comment??

LOCUM PART 2

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 193px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SVsxdEMrxfI/AAAAAAAAAHk/OMf8BgFM-mg/s320/KcSH.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285872963062318578" />
One of the busiest radiology department I have worked in. You are alone, reporting 40 plain films, 7 MRIs, 6 CT scans and doing 20 ultrasounds. Luckily fluroscopy cases are very rare. All must be finished by 5 pm on the same day. It seems that you are doing the work of 4 radiologists, if it is a government hospital. I don't know how the resident radiologist can cope with this all this years. I couldn't cope with it, too tired after a few days. Can't wait for all of this to end.

MSI WIND U100 : The Best Macbook Nano

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SVsphL7Fn5I/AAAAAAAAAHc/w9LrXbssKng/s320/MSI_WIND_U100_Bianco.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285864237762453394" />
Is it true? Maybe it is true, since the recently released realtek Wifi driver for MSI Wind, makes it a complete working Macbook Nano. It is a very good buy now, selling at RM1699 with a 6 cell battery. Upgrading another 1 GB RAM, is another RM50 adding up. However since MSI Wind is also using a WD 2.5 inch SATA Hard Disk, upgrading the HD would be a breeze. So for you out there who wants a very big HD to keep all your data, you can upgrade it to a 320GB SATA hard disk. A WD Passport portable HD 320GB costs around RM350, about 2 months ago. Would be much cheaper now. So in total, upgrading the RAM to 2GB, HD to 320GB, the total cost of the upgraded Macbook Nano would cost you RM2000++. Anyone for a Macbook Nano???

CELCOM ONLINE REGISTRATION

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/ST0QThB-1oI/AAAAAAAAAGk/atsDtdy-Df4/s320/Celcom_logo_Eng.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277392265818330754" />
As mentioned in my previous post, I did an online registration for Celcom Postpaid Executive 20 package together with the Unlimited 3G package. This registration was done on the 1st December 2008. After more than 2 days, i didn't receive any call from celcom about the delivery of my SIM card. I went to Celcom Centre in Kuantan, yesterday. Checked with the officer in charge. They couldn't find any information about my registration at all, even though my credit card was already charged. I forwarded her, my completed registration form, for checking. She will check with KL Main office about my registration and will inform me back tomorrow (Tuesday 9th December 2008). For this, thumbs down to Celcom again. It seems, that the online registration service is not connected to their online registration network. HP had just released its update of their netbook. The old Mini Note 2133 using VIA chipset was updated to a new Atom based Intel netbook, ie the HP Mini 1000. The specs are quite impressive, reviewed here by www.notebookreview.com. The reviewer had given it an Editor's choice due to a good keyboard and good screen. However the disadvantage of it is that you need to buy a proprietary adapter for the VGA port and also it is using a slow 1.8 inch 4200 rpm HD, maximum at 60GB. Now, need to find whether anyone had done a Hackintosh on it. It shouldn't be difficult since it is also using an Atom processor too. Will need to take a closer look at it during the PC Fair this weekend.

CELCOM 3G INSIDE BUILDINGS

I have mixed experiences for Celcom 3G signals inside buildings. As a radiologists, we usually worked inside rooms, mainly barium plastered rooms to shield the radiation from radiation emitting sources such as CT or Angiograms. Have mixed experiences on Celcom signals. In Kuantan Hospital, when i am inside the room, i only get GPRS signal. No 3G. Whereas, for Digi, I managed to get EDGE signal. However in Cheras, within the hospital building, Digi signal is very poor, to get a GPRS signal is very good already. However for Celcom, I can get full bar HSDPA signal. In Batu Pahat, Johor, I only get a GPRS signal inside the room. However for Digi, i can get an EDGE signal, even though it is only 2 bars. At home in Kuantan, as i mentioned in the previous post, I can get 3G signal for Celcom. Maybe this is due to the positioning of the Celcom and Digi towers. Or is it due to the wavelength of the Telco signals? Only a technical person can tell me about this.

CELCOM 3G AND HSDPA IN DAMANSARA KUANTAN

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 298px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/ST0gXQAMtpI/AAAAAAAAAG0/Kxz1isdLPas/s320/BDK" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277409922152969874" />
Mobile internet anyone? Since using a smartphone for 4 years, i need to have an always stable GPRS line with me. I have been subscribing to an unlimited package since then. For the last 3 years, i am using Digi EDGE as my primary line together with the RM66 unlimited data package. But ever since a few months ago, this digi edge has becoming unstable. I couldn't get signals or no EDGE in certain areas. As you know, Digi coverage is not as good as other telco coverage. Since I also don't have any internet line at home, i also need to have another unlimited data package for my kids at home. I noted recently, probably since October 2008, Celcom has increased its 3G coverage in Pahang. My house has already been covered with 3G. I don't want Streamyx or Slowmyx, have bad experience with them. Very unstable line. Digi has been very slow to increase its coverage in Pahang, it is still GPRS at home. Due to this, i terminated my supplementary RM33 SIM for data with Digi and subscribed to the Celcom 3G line at RM68. This is for use at home. My children don't need the HSDPA speed. However sometimes, we got the HSDPA signal at home. Thumbs up to Celcom in Pahang. Thumbs down to Digi in Pahang.

LOCUM

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 211px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/ST0iROyUOdI/AAAAAAAAAG8/Pe9MZwsVfLQ/s320/hpbp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277412017770346962" />
My first locum after 6 months. Do i need to do locum? Yes, I need to do it for the money. But the job is very dull and boring. My hands is getting itchy to do all the interventional procedures which I have been doing for the last few months. I also need it to polish back my general radiology skills. After doing subspecialty in interventional radiology since August 2008, i didn't do much general radiography, mammography, ultrasound, CT scan or MRI scan readings. 4 months without doing all this, will makes you rusty. So, this is a good reason for me to do locum, besides the money. Haha! Now to find another good reason for it.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 222px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/ST0kC5wLUNI/AAAAAAAAAHE/waBiLva-S2o/s320/Happy+Birthday.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277413970629316818" />
It's my birthday today. I am one year older today. Got a present from my wife and children during lunch time. Just wondering, should i get a present for myself. Should i change my smartphone? Nah! Both my Treo 750v and Dopod D810 is working wonderfully. Couldn't find any new smartphones which could replace my Treo 750v. Should i get a new notebook? Nah! My new Macbook 12 inch with 4GB RAM and 250GB HD is working well, using dual boot with Windows XP Pro. For portability, i am using my Asus EEE PC 900. New notebooks doesn't interest me at all now. New smartphones also doesn't give me new adrenaline high. Maybe i am getting older. Trips to Low Yat or PC Fair is getting very boring now. Nothing new excites me. So, i don't think i need a birthday present for myself.

QUEST FOR A MACBOOK NANO

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/ST0kjwdEPqI/AAAAAAAAAHM/mT90CQi7PXA/s320/lenovos10.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277414535068925602" />
After using a Macbook since the last 3 months, i need to carry it around with me replacing my 2kg Dell Latitude D420. A Macbook usually weighs at least 3 kg, if you include the charger. Due to this, i will usually leave it at home or in the office and carry the sub kg Asus EEEPC 900 instead
Since netbook becomes a hot seller after the successful story of Asus EEEPC 700, many hackintosher managed to build a netbook running Mac OSX Leopard. These Mac OSX netbook is usually called a Macbook Nano. However most of this netbook will suffer some non functioning hardwares, depending on which model, due to unavailability of Mac drivers for the hardware. You can use either use the Kalyway 10.5.2 which can be upgraded using the Kalyway 10.5.3. Some also use the IATKOS v4. However most of them will use the MSIWindOSx86.iso, which is actually made for MSIWind.

Below are the few guides on installing a Mac OSX leopard on a netbook.
1. MSI Wind

2. Acer Aspire One

3. Lenovo S10

4. Dell Mini 9

5. Asus EEEPC 901 or 1000

Out of these 5 netbooks, Lenovo S10 had the most impressive specs which include an express card slot. However Lenovo S10 will suffer a non working Ethernet. Acer Aspire One is also a good candidate with a working ethernet. However the specs is not that good, with no bluetooth and only a 0.3 MP camera. Besides, the wifi won't work unless you change to a Dell 1390 or 1490 mini PCI card. Asus EEEPC 901 also suffer the similar fate of Lenovo S10 with non functioning ethernet.

So, you are left with either MSI Wind or Dell Mini 9. MSI Wind has an impressive specifications similar to Dell Mini 9, with the only difference of a much bigger hard disk (using a 2.5 inch notebook HD). It has its own MSIWindOSx86.iso which is about 4.3GB in size. The only problem with MSI Wind, is that the native wifi card won't work at all. You usually need either a Dell mini PCI card model 1390 or 1490 to get the wifi working.

At this point of time, for me, the best candidate for a Macbook Nano is Dell Mini 9. The specs are quite good with built in BT, 1.3MP camera and Wifi. Only that the maximum HD is 16GB which is a SSD. SSD would be better for a netbook, since it can stand more impact and fall compared to a normal HD used by MSIWind. Besides, other than the HD, it share similar specs with MSI Wind, so you can also use the same MSIWindOSx86.iso DVD for this hackintoshing purpose. The best thing is that, most of the hardware will work, including the wifi.

With this in mind, i went to the Malaysian Dell website to order my customized Dell Mini 9. Upon logging in, i found that the Dell Mini 9 is only sold at Dell Retailers, not online. For retailers, the Dell Mini 9 specifications are standard with only 0.3MP camera and 8GB SSD. I emailed Dell Malaysia asking whether i can order a customized Dell Mini 9. Got a reply after a few days later. No, we don't sell Dell Mini 9 online since it can only be sold by Dell Retailers with the standard specifications. My only hope to get a customized Dell Mini 9 is to get is from ebay or ask my cousin in US to buy it for me there.

However MSI Wind is also a good candidate for Macbook Nano. Only that i need to buy the Dell miniPCi Wifi card first. I will take a careful look at MSI Wind on my next trip to Low Yat Plaza. Meanwhile will be searching the Dell miniPCI card in ebay before that trip.

NTFS EDITOR FOR MAC OSX

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SMb9kROj2ZI/AAAAAAAAAF4/Cmo483m282g/s320/Paragon+NTFS.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244157615661111698" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SMb9mojUDNI/AAAAAAAAAGA/5VZVtlG2HTI/s320/NTFS.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244157656281910482" />
Now you are having both Mac OSX and Windows in your Macbook. Usually Windows Hard Disk partition is in NTFS format. Mac OSX has the capability to read and edit either FAT or FAT32 HD format. However for the NTFS format, it can only read it, but not edit. This would cause a problem for you, since you would like to do some editing of the files that you have saved in the Windows NTFS hard disk, when you are in the Mac OSX boot.

NTFS also has several advantages over FAT32 format, which you can read yourself elsewhere. FAT32 also has a limitation of 32GB only. You need to use a NTFS format if your partition is bigger than 32GB.

There are two ways to do this, both using a third party software.
1. Using McFuse and NTFS-3G, which are both freeware. You need to install them both to make it work. However after reading the instructions, it looks a little bit complicated for an amateur like me.
2. Using Paragon NTFS, which is a shareware costing around USD40. It is very easy to install. After the installation, you just need to restart your Mac, and it works immediately. There is a trial version available which runs for 10 days only.

So, now you can do the editing of the files that you have saved in your Windows NTFS hard disk without doing a transfer to a USB thumbdrive.

Next is to get a partition software for Mac, so i can keep all my documents folder (Home) in it and use that partition in both Mac and Windows. That would be great. Anyone can suggest me one?

DUAL BOOTING YOUR MACBOOK OR MAC

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SMb0P8nrUhI/AAAAAAAAAFg/ErlNUfFeoUk/s320/Boot+Camp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244147370927280658" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SMb0P1NNdzI/AAAAAAAAAFo/kr2RqQMx0B0/s320/Boot+Camp2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244147368937223986" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SMb0QGRW_fI/AAAAAAAAAFw/gTfuuraT_m0/s320/Boot+Camp3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244147373518028274" />
You want both Mac OSX and Windows in your Macbook. This is due to several reasons. Some of the softwares that you have previously doesn't work in Mac OSX. Even then, if it works with Mac OSX, you still prefer it to be done in a Windows environment. Or you are being greedy to have it both. With Mac OSX 10.5 ie Leopard it can be done easily using Boot Camp.

Just open utilities from the finder. Click on Boot Camp Assistant. First, print the installation guidelines. This would be very useful during the setup. Then click continue. You first need to partition the hard disk to accomodate the Windows installation. Select the size of the hard disk that you want to allocate to Windows. About 20GB is good enough for Windows. If you want more it is your choice. Then you follow the instructions given. This is when the printed manual becomes handy. You can only use Windows XP Home or Pro, Service Pack 2 or later (better to have Service Pack 3) or any type of Windows Vista. I did a Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 installation which i later upgrade to Service Pack 3 via Microsoft Online update. The good thing about Boot Camp, if you don't like the Windows Partition, you can just remove it also using the Boot Camp Assistant. Please refer to the manual.

After the complete installation, you need to put in the Mac OSX DVD (you can find it in the small box that comes with your Macbook). This DVD will install all the drivers needed for all the hardwares in your Macbook to work with Windows. After doing it a few times (installing and removing Windows from Mac), i found that Windows installation is much easier and faster on a Mac due to availability of this DVD.

Next you need to do a software updates. First you need to update the usual Windows programme using Microsoft Update. Then you need to update the Apple Software (from the program file Window). Since you want to use Windows, you need to have a good antivirus, spyware programme, etc. I am using Kaspersky Anti Virus 9.0 for this.

So, now you have a dual booth Mac OSX and Windows XP or Vista in your Macbook. However there is another option of running Windows in a Mac OSX without rebooting your Macbook. This is to use a third party software such as Parallel or VMWare Fusion. However both of these softwares are sharewares. Boot Camp is free and preloaded in your Mac.

END NOTE FOR MAC

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SMW_6hqMKMI/AAAAAAAAAFY/CydCyYisqLc/s320/EndNote1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243808353331456194" />
Have been using it for my reference manager for the past few months, after getting a tutorial from Dr. Jamaluddin. End Note for Mac is slightly more difficult to use as compared to Windows. For windows, it is just click on the download citation manager and then open the file in End Note, the article will be downloaded into End Note. For Mac, it need to be downloaded to text. Then we have to import the text file. Until now, i haven't managed to import any reference yet. As for the Microsoft Word integration, i couldn't find any link for the End Note integration.

So, as for now, when i want to download new reference, i would use End Note for Windows. Then i will copy or sync the End Note file for my paper into my Mac.
This is possible since i am using Boot Camp in my Macbook, with both Mac and Windows XP Pro installed. For sync, i would use Chronosync.

This will continue, unless someone can teach me how to use End Note for Mac. Or when i have a good knowledge and skills to use End Note for Mac.
This is the weakness of Mac.

USB BLUETOOTH ON EEE PC 900

I just wanted a bluetooth in my EEE PC 900 just for the sake of completeness. You want everything available. Since bluetooth is missing in EEE PC 900, i kept just thinking how to install it. So bought myself a USB microbluetooh which extends about 1 cm beyond the usb port. So i went to EEE PC wiki. Used the instructions given.

dmesg

sudo hciconfig

But i am stucked at the "sudo hciconfig". Command not supported. Searched the forums, not very helpful and some complex advice. Later on found out that actually hciconfig tool is not installed in EEE PC 900. So, what i did is doing the update of the EEE.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install bluez-utils

Then confirm and say yes to everything. After this only you will have the hciconfig. Then continue back what was mentioned in the EEE PC wiki.

sudo hciconfig

This will list the bluetooth interfaces.

sudo hciconfig hci0 up

This is to activate the bluetooth.

sudo hciconfig hci0 down

This is to stop or deactivate the bluetooth.

So, you can use bluetooth with your EEE PC, it was very easy to install.

I need to remember these three command to activate or deactivate my BT.

sudo hciconfig
sudo hciconfig hci0 up
sudo hciconfig hci0 down

So, whats next. A lot more things can be done with the bluetooth such as:
- using your Nokia phone or WM6 smartphone internet sharing or 3G via bluetooth.
- using a BT GPS
- using A2DP with your stereo BT headphone.

This is for later. Might start with the BT GPS first since i already have an internet connection with my Sierra 875u USB modem, which make the internet sharing option not very important.

Hehe!

WINDOWS XP PRO ON EEE PC 900

Tried an experiment few days ago to install Windows XP Professional on my EEE PC. It took me nearly half a day since i need to use a USB thumbdrive since i don't have a USB CD or DVD drive around. Installing Windows through USB thumbdrive is painstakingly very slow. One complete installation need around 1 hour. However later on i have problems in making the EEE PC to dual boot. With the problems of the dual boot, i later on decided to have only Windows XP for the EEE PC. So, i have now a Windows XP EEE PC. Tried to use it for two days. The boot time for the EEE PC is very slow, which takes forever for me (about 3 minutes). However with Windows XP i have the advantage of installing other softwares such as SPSS and etc.

So, after two days, due to slowness of the boot time, i decided to switch back to Xandros. The USB thumbdrive method to recover the Xandros from the supplied DVD is very easy. It took me about half an hour to reinstall the Xandros on my EEE PC and also format the primary and secondary drive. Currently very happy with the Xandros EEE PC. Now, this post is typed from my EEE PC with Xandros. The boot time is very fast around 15 to 20 seconds.

Will never install Windows XP again in my EEE PC.

Haha.

WELCOME TO RAMADHAN

Today is the first day of Ramadhan. This is a very challenging aneurysm for an endosvascular treatment since if the aneurysm was coiled, it would sacrifice the posterior cerebral artery. Another option is to stent the posterior cerebral artery and then coil the aneurysm. After discussions, the best option is to clip the aneurysm until the origin of the posterior cerebral artery by neurovascular surgeon.

LINNC 2008, PARIS

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SLIyCoxY_0I/AAAAAAAAAEg/z80Xi3aKrSE/s320/IMAGE_019.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238304337471012674" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SLIyCpWonyI/AAAAAAAAAEo/WhYsKL4zako/s320/IMAGE_022.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238304337627225890" />
LINNC 2008, for Live Interventional Neuroradiology and Neurosurgery Course organized by Prof Jacques Moret, a world renowed Interventional Neuroradiologist. Very interesting 3 days course which include presentation and hot discussion. The most interesting discussion is regarding the EVA3S trials (http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00190398) which was presented by the researcher himself. It was very hot and interesting and had to be stopped by Prof Moret himself. For the uninitiated, EVA3S really change the perception of carotid stenting practice in the whole world especially France.

What i really like is the way the transmitted live transmission of angiography suite from Fondation Adolphe De Rothschild Hospital and neurosurgery operating theatre from Helsinki. It was very clear with only a very minimal delay in sound transmission from Helsinki. From what i know, the live neurosurgery from Helsinki was transmitted via satellite. And the way the transmit the images on the screen, interchanging from two to one screen was fantastic. I think they are using Mac for this.

For 2009, the course will be combined with ACINR (www.ics08.org) which will be held in Paris. For 2010, it will also be combined with ACINR and will be held in Istanbul. Looking forward for the Istanbul course in 2010.

PARIS JUNE 2008

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SLItOh_C8HI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/L3TLbKST41w/s320/IMAGE_034.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238299044249530482" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SLItPOQB4AI/AAAAAAAAAEY/WPqbU0btNok/s320/IMAGE_036.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238299056131923970" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SLIsuBjTwbI/AAAAAAAAAEI/su4_gAe9-sc/s320/IMAGE_027.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238298485787443634" />
Went to Paris last June 2008 for the LINNC course (www.linnc.com) which was held in the Carousel du Louvre (where the keep the Mona Lisa painting in the museum there). This is my second trip to Paris, after the first visit in 2007. Since i am not an art lover, Paris is not so exciting for me, and things in Europe are expensive. However the organizer and EV3 made a boat trip that night and i took a few shots of Paris with my Dopod D810 camera (so the images are not that good), which includes Arc De Triompe and Eifel Tower.

Went for a walk around town and found this crooked building image, which is actually only a drawing to conceal the construction of a building behind it. Very interesting drawing as compared to a very plain partition in any constructions in Kuala Lumpur.

For the last night, the organizer had a dinner in Chateau de Versailes, which is the last castle of the French Monarch. We skip this visit, since it is quite far from centre of the town and also we miss real meals. If you know Frenchmen, their lunch is very small and most of it not "halal". So instead of going to Chateau de Versailes, we go and find some Arabic food, and we have Kebab for dinner. Haha!

And as for the conference, it is fantastic, which i will talk about in another post.

DRAGON FRUIT

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SLIovFYl7AI/AAAAAAAAAEA/K4q_-Z7yeo4/s320/img010.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238294105949596674" />

All my children love fruits. The third one (Aina Mahirah) really love fruits and vegetables. She can eat fruits only and skip her meals. But as usually, she cannot miss any meals, since my wife will force on her.

Went to Kluang during the weekend for some business. Stopped by an organic farm and bought four units of baby dragon fruit tree, which we have planned to buy since a few months ago.

Yesterday, planted the four trees in my backyard. Made the dragon fruit housing using some woods from the nearby construction site. Polishing my unused carpentry skills. Asked a few questions to the seller, it need very little water since it is actually a cactus. However it need a lot of organic fertilizer, in which you need to put it in every forthnightly. I will post more pictures as the tree grew. It will take at least 8 months for the first harvest.

Dragon fruit or pitaya, with a scientific name of Hylocereus has many uses. It can be eaten raw or made into juice.

This will be my experiment and if works, i will plant more of it around my house.

MAC AND OSIRIX

I am currently using a black 2.4GHz dual core Macbook with a 4GB RAM and 250GB hard disk. As for the time being, i still have Windows Vista Home in it, using dual boot from Boot Camp. The initial reason why i want to use a Mac is to use OSIRIX. After that, Mac is very irresistable.

OSIRIX is an opensource PACS workstation software. It is a fantastic software which can function similar as a modality workstation provided by system vendors such as Siemens, General Electrics or Philips. The only thing that cost you is to buy a high end Mac. The best is to use a Mac Pro, since you need to view thousands of images in one period. I will give some screenshots of OSIRIX. For more information, please google for OSIRIX.

COMPARISON OF MONEY MANAGER PROGRAMME FOR WINDOWS MOBILE

When I was searching for money manager programme for WM6 which can sync with my Macbook, i managed to try a few or almost all of them. There are a few which is SPB Finance, Pocket Quicken, Splashmoney and Ultrasoft Money. However during this period i only tried the first three. Didn't manage to try Ultrasoft Money. But i have used Ultrasoft Money for Palm, a few years back.

For basic function, almost all has it. However for the backup, import and export function, only SPB finance has it. There is none for Pocket Quicken and Splashmoney. So, SPB Finance wins here. Ultrasoft Money for WM6 has a similar function with SPB Finance. However i can't remember if it has an import or export function.

However, amongst all, Ultrasoft Money for Palm is the best, provided you sync it with Microsoft Money. It can sync your budget and also all your scheduled bills that you have programmed in Microsoft Money. Ultrasoft Money for WM6 didn't have the function to sync all your scheduled bill. This is a flaw.

I am still pondering to go back to Palm, probably Centro. However since i am a Macbook user, it would be useless since i won't have Microsoft Money for Mac. So, i will continue to use the current option of managing my account.

MONEY PROGRAMME FOR MAC

This is a problem when using a Mac. There is no Microsoft Money for Mac version. There is Quicken and Splashmoney for Mac. Tried them both, quite similar with the Windows version. I easily import the data from Microsoft Money via this method.

First i did a final sync of my Microsoft Money data into SPB Finance in my Treo 750v. Then from the Treo 750v, I export the data to a QIF file. Then from either Quicken or Splashmoney, the QIF file can be imported into both of them. However final editing need to be done for the initial balance of each account, that is to balance out the accounts. This is the first part.

The second part is to find a programme which can sync either Quicken or Splashmoney to my Treo 750v. Sadly, there is NONE. Full stop. I am very sad.

So, in the end, i continue to use SPB Finance in my Treo 750v with no sync option with an QIF file and email it into my backup gmail account.

Still hoping someone will make a programme to sync.

Very sad.

MIGRATING DATA FROM MICROSOFT OUTLOOK TO MACBOOK

I am now starting to be a Mac user after all these years of being a Windoze user. Fell in love with Mac, after only 1 week. After a long thought, decided to completely be a Mac user. However i have a problem. I need to transfer my Microsoft Outlook data into Ical and address book for Mac. Searched a few forums and discussion and finally found a solution. Let me share how i do it here.

For the contacts in Microsoft Outlook, I installed Mozilla Thunderbird first. Then import the contacts using Thunderbird from Outlook. Then export all contacts to *.ldif file. Take the *.ldif file. Use the Mac address book to import the *.ldif file into your address book. Microsoft Entourage can sync with the address book, if you decided to use Entourage later on.

For calendar, first sync the Outlook with the Google Calendar using Google Calendar Sync. Then open manage calendar and choose the calendar in Google Calendar. Find ICAL in the option. Right click on ICAL (the private calendar part), and save the data in your PC. Take that file into your macbook. ICAL can import that file. Microsoft Entourage can sync with ICAL easily, if you decided to use Entourage later.

However if you are very lazy to do all this, just buy OUTLOOK2MAC, for USD10. It can do it all for you.

Next is for me to find how to transfer my Microsoft Money data to Mac. That would be another headache.

HUAWEI E220 MODEM WITH EEE PC 900

Found some new findings about the Huawei E220 USB modem. It can be used with Xandros EEE PC which everyone knew. What people didn't know is that it is very easy. From the eeeuser.com forum, it is a difficult process with much tweakings need to be done.

What i did is to follow exactly the methods and programming used for the Sierra 875u USB modem. Even during the dialing process, the screen show it is using the Sierra driver. However after that, the modem seems to work.

The advantage of Huawei is that it is cheaper than Sierra. The price difference is about RM200. I should have gotten the Huawei and use the difference to buy a leather case formy EEE PC 900.

WATCHING DVD ON EEE PC 900

Your EEE PC 900 or 901 is has a big 9 inch LCD screen. It would make a great DVD player when you travel or in the car. But the problem is that it doen't have a CD or DVD player within. The easiest way is for you to buy an external USB DVD drive and play all your DVD movies from the USB DVD player. But the disadvantage of an external USB DVD player is that it will use more power from your EEE PC battery and it also add more bulk to your travelling items, an extra thing to carry.

So, the best way is to convert your DVD movies to format which you can keep in the EEE PC hard drive or a large 16GB SDHC (An A Data 16GB cost around RM200 now). With formatting, you can keep around 12 to 13 full length 90 minutes DVD movies in a 16GB SDHC card. That would give you around 20hours of movie time.

There are several converters around for both Windows and Mac. What i use for my Macbook is Handbrake (http://downloads.zdnet.com/search.aspx?kw=dvd+ripper&osfilter=mac&licfilter=free). It is a freeware and does the job well. I recently coverted "Hancock" at it gives around 1GB in AVI format. It took about 1 hour for the conversion process. Sorry, i can't give any Windows software, since i don't use Windoze now. Hehehe!

For the Xandros EEE PC, it can read mpeg, ogg and avi format faultlessly. However if the movie is in mp4 format, you may need to downgrade the mplayer to an older format, which i did. You can try using this tutorial ( http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=937). But if you are not adventurous enough, just convert all your DVDs into avi format.

Don't worry if you are using a Windows XP EEE PC, the built in Windows Media Player should read the file well. However if you need to read divx or xvid movies, you need to install an older version of WMP. Google for it.

So, enjoy your movies while you travel. With a power inverter in your car, you can have 20hours of DVD movies while travelling. But since the EEE PC speaker is awful, you may need to buy an external speaker to get a better sound. It would be much better, if you can find a way to connect the sound to your car sound system. That would be great.

Now i am in the process of converting Dark Knight and X Files into avi.

Enjoy.

BEING MOBILE WITH ASUS EEE PC 900.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cVFfHv2TasU/SLI8_-uQk2I/AAAAAAAAAFQ/h0Oqcva-Y8k/s320/IMAGE_054.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238316386451755874" />

I just got my Asus EEE PC 900. It is the Xandros version with 20GB SSD hard disk. It doesn't need any introduction since it is known to everyone unless you are living in a cave without any internet connection. First impression, very small and light. The 8.9 inch LCD screen is a very good improvement compared to the 701. The keyboard is quite small and cramped and i am still learning to type with the keyboard using all my 10 fingers. This mini review is written using the EEE PC.

The built in Xandros OS has nearly all the necessary software for your everyday use. For example, Firefox, Thunderbird, Skype, Openoffice, File Manager and etc. You don't really need to upgrade it to Windows,since Windows is make the EEE PC very slow. After using it for a few days, i found it gives you nearly the full function of a desktop or high end notebook, minus the weight. So in the end i decided to use it as my secondary notebook when mobile or not at office. The weight of less than 1 kg, makes it a truly portable notebook. With the aid of a full keyboard, it is much better to emails, surfing and writing documents compared to a smartphone.

Next is to make it a better and faster notebook. So, i upgraded the Xandros to a full desktop version. You can do it easily via the eeeuser wiki (http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:getkde). Next to be portable, i need to use it with a 3G modem. So i use my Sierra 3G modem 875u USB. You can do it via here (http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=1100 &

http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=22695).

Next i upgraded the RAM to a 2GB RAM. According to an eeeuser forum, this would not void the warranty. I bought a Samsung 2GB DDR2 667MHz RAM. But it could not be used, the screen goes haywire. So, what i do is to exchange it with my Dell D420 2GB DDR 500MHz RAM and voila it works. So my Dell D420 got a new 667MHz RAM. I am not sure what is the cause of this. The original RAM is a 400MHz DDR 1GB. Initially i want to have a USB bluetooth in it, but i am not sure whether i am going to use it or not, since the Sierra USB modem is working well. But you can use a USB BT via this tweaking (http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:bluetoothdongles).

Next is to sync your documents from your Mac or Windows PC to the EEE PC, since you don't want to always copy and paste the documents to your portable harddisk or SD card. Since the EEE PC has a SD card reader and it also supports SDHC, using a SDHC would be a good idea. A 16GB SDHC card would cost less than RM250 now. Currently i am using a 1GB SD card, since i am still waiting for my 16GB SDHC card to arrive. To sync the documents to the SD card, i am using CHRONOSYNC for Mac. (http://www.econtechnologies.com/site/Pages/ChronoSync/chrono_overview.html). For Windows, you can use ALWAYSYNC (http://allwaysync.com/). Both are shareware, but it is a small price to pay for a true portability. With the SDHC card, all my important documents will be synced into it, located in the built in SD card reader of the EEE PC. At home or office, i just connect the SD card to a card reader and sync it with the Macbook or notebook. I didn't even try to transfer the files into the already small EEE PC hard disk.

I have yet to test the true length of the battery life of this EEE PC. But according to reviews, the original 5800mAH battery would last at least 3 to 4 hours on normal usage. Since i don't use wifi at all, it would probably last me slightly more than that. However if you need a longer life battery you can get it a WORCELL at Sing135 minus postage (http://worcell.com/product_info.php?products_id=74526&osCsid=11c78453355389bfdf6acea455bf1932) which is available in both black and white. And if you want to get silicon skin or a leather casing for it, you can get it at BRANDO. They are offering a few choices.

I also have a first try on using the Openoffice Impress, the equivalent of Powerpoint yesterday for my presentation. It doesn't recognize the Office 2007 files (pptx, docx and etc), but the Office 2003 and below didn't cause any problem. The external output to LCD projector works flawlessly and my presentation was perfect.

The Skype with the 1.3MP camera works well even with Digi EDGE only. I talked to my sister in Japan on it yesterday. So, for now, i am very happy with this EEE PC.

The new EEE PC 1000 with a 10 inch LCD would be better but the price might not be good enough. With the current price of around RM1500, it would be a better investment compared to a Treo or a HTC.

After this, i think i will buy the leather case from Brando. Maybe after a few months, i will buy the big battery 10400mAH from Worcell. But for now, the current setup is good enough for me.

Tapping off.

NEW PLACE, NEW IDEAS

Hi! No time and been very busy for the last few months. In a crossroad now. Very frustated with the system in Malaysia's government hospital. As you all knew, we are very far behind in facilities as compared to Thailand and Singapore. I am working in Kuantan, in a state hospital. But the facilities is unacceptable of a state hospital. We don't even a decent fluroscopy machine to do a simple lower limb angiogram. Pathetic!!. Not only that, now only in the third quarter of the year, no more money to buy films. We don't even spend money to buy expensive catheters, guidewires or stents for interventional radiology. Whose fault is this? Not the head of department. Not the hospital director. Not the state health director. It is the policy maker's fault. Too much money were spent on inapropriate projects to please the cronies. I dont' see much future to develop the hospital. It is too cramped. Will have to see!!!!!!!!

Right Tibia XRay

A 13 year old boy presented with pain and swelling of the right lower limb for 2 months.

Findings:
A permeative lytic lesion involving the metadiaphysis of the right tibia with wide zon of transition. This one is not written from ublog. The best thing about ublog is that it is a freeware. Other mobile blogging tools are shareware ie vagalog, moblog etc. I have tried vagablog previously but the interface are not very user friendly. There was not much updates ever since. Ublog supports blogger/blogspot, typepad and movable type. I can only comment on blogger since i am using it for blogger. Never had any experience with typepad or movable type. First you have to set the settings for your blog. You can set for any number of blogs. The manual is quite helpful (http://pam-ya.com/palmware/uBlogManual-en/). I have 2 blogs around. You can create a new post by just clicking on the New Post icon. You don't need to publish immediately. It can be saved first in your palm and be published later. The best thing is all the published or unpublished blog from your palm will be saved in your palm unless you deleted it. You can still edit the blog even after being published. This feature is absent from vagablog. I will try to post some images later via go@blogger.com.

DTG8 with native PDF support

Great news. Documents to go version 8 had been released with native PDF support. Now with that, your treo will become an ultimate mobile tool. But I still hope that PalmPDF would be out of beta since it is a freeware. Info from Brighthand and Palminfocenter. Will review it later.

My Treo 600

I have been an avid palm users for more than 4 years now. Start using a Palm Vx, then upgrading to Sony CLIE S360 to Palm Zire 71 to Tungsten T2 and currently to Palm Treo 600. The palm had become an indispensible tool for me. I tried blogging last year but had stopped for more than 6 months. Time is a bit scarce for me. Juggling my time for teaching, clinical work, research and administration took a toll on me. So now, I am trying to blog via my Treo 600 via ublog and go@blogger.com using whatever free time that I have. For now my main topic will mainly focus on palm whether softwares or hardware. I will be writing some mini reviews on the popular softwares that I am using.

New Blogging

Trying to revive my blogging on the move using my Treo 600.
